Just heard this on the radio – N.J. Governor McGreevey To Resign.
Whoa.
</Neo voice>
UPDATE:
Hannity confirmed it on air and KYW (Philly) is reporting that the resignation stems from an ongoing “civil suit,” rather than corruption charges or the other scandals that have been plaguing McGreevey.
There’s apparently a press conference scheduled for 45 minutes from now and Hannity is going to be carrying it live. More to follow.
UPDATE 2:
ABC 7 is reporting that McGreevey will not be stepping down this afternoon but may be considering doing so after the election in November.
UPDATE 3:
Jeff Jarvis has a bunch of links, as well as a series of rumors:
It’s dripping out: Golan Cipel [he’s a man. -ed.] is reportedly going to file a sexual harrassment claim against McGreevey.
Cipel was, with great controversy, appointed as state anti-terrorism chief early in the administration.
…
The NJ.com Statehouse Forum says that McGreevey’s mysterious broken leg is related. Rumors….
The background on Cipel is that he was hired by McGreevey to be head of homeland security for the state — even though he had no experience in that (other than being an Israeli).
Overheard in my office: “This is worse than banging your intern.”
Ouch.
UPDATE 4:
I’m listening to McG’s speech. I reiterate – Wowsers. He just came out and admitted to a “consensual sexual affair” in his press conference.
I’m stunned.
UPDATE 5:
He’s resigning as of November 15th, 2004 so as to avoid Brent Schundler being able to win the Gov.’s house in a special election that would take place to coincide with the Presidential election.
UPDATE 6:
Here’s the WNBC story covering the press conference.
And Fark logs in with possibly the best headline I’ve seen in ages: New Jersey Governor to resign. Will not get security deposit back because the whole state smells funny
