UPDATE: The Jake Tapper article used as the basis for this post misconstrued/misquoted Bill Clinton’s statement. See comments below. -ed.
I wonder just how long it’s going to take someone from the Hillary campaign to smother Bill in his sleep, what with his seeming desire to tank her campaign at every conceivable turn. See, for instance, ABC News’ report from a campaign stop by Bill:
Former President Bill Clinton was in Denver, Colorado, stumping for his wife yesterday.
In a long, and interesting speech, he characterized what the U.S. and other industrialized nations need to do to combat global warming this way: “We just have to slow down our economy and cut back our greenhouse gas emissions ’cause we have to save the planet for our grandchildren.”
Gee, wait, I thought the (Democratically-controlled) House of Representin’ just put a whole lot of work into passing legislation to, y’know, stimulate the economy. Shouldn’t Bill (and Hillary, what with her voting position in the Senate and all) be therefore fighting against such legislation in the interests of the grandchildren? WHO WILL THINK OF THE GRANDCHILDREN!?!
It’s almost as if no one in D.C. knows a lick about basic economics. Scary, right?
I hope and pray that the American electorate collectively keeps these two chuckleheads and all their advisors, hangers-on, etc. as far as is humanly possible from the reigns of power.
You’re either a liar or an ignorant twit, which is it?
You know what’s a great, fun thing to do? Leave drive-by, substance-free comments on a blog and leave your site’s URL attached to your name despite the fact that you can’t seem to get it to work correctly.
Very nice webpage you’ve got there, all MySQL-error-y and whatnot.
I’m not in the mood to be trifled with today. If you’ve something of value to say, out with it. Else, take your traffic elsewhere.
And yes, I am aware that Tapper/ABC News appears to have taken the quote out of context. Didn’t think it was worth updating the post, but if that’s what you’re on about…
Then replace the out-of-context quote or you’re dishonestly peddling falsehoods in order to smear someone.
A simple correction and an apology would be nice, but somehow I don’t think you’re capable of that.
Here, I’ll even be nice and post the entire quote for you:
“Everybody knows that global warming is real,†Mr. Clinton said, giving a shout-out to Al Gore’s Nobel Peace Prize, “but we cannot solve it alone.â€
“And maybe America, and Europe, and Japan, and Canada — the rich counties — would say, ‘OK, we just have to slow down our economy and cut back our greenhouse gas emissions ’cause we have to save the planet for our grandchildren.’ We could do that.
“But if we did that, you know as well as I do, China and India and Indonesia and Vietnam and Mexico and Brazil and the Ukraine, and all the other countries will never agree to stay poor to save the planet for our grandchildren. The only way we can do this is if we get back in the world’s fight against global warming and prove it is good economics that we will create more jobs to build a sustainable economy that saves the planet for our children and grandchildren. It is the only way it will work.
Binkyboy:
You’ll have to excuse me today. I don’t have the energy to muster up much of a response given a tragedy in the life of a dear friend. Think what you will of me — the original Tapper/ABC piece implied precisely what I was reacting to.
That a second Clinton administration would be dedicated to statist “command economy”-type policies is beyond question. It’s just this particular instance is not one which indicates such Marxist/anti-democratic/anti-free market thinking, given the full context of the quote.
Tapper has been taken to task for his poor editing and writing skills. His intention in the modified quote is clear and despite the protestation of those that have read and understand the full quote there is no apology or correction from anyone.
I’m sorry for your friend, and I hope things get better. I still think a correction on your part would go a long ways towards maintaining a truthful blog.
Corrective note added to the head of the post, Binkyboy. I maintain the truth of my underlying premises, namely: Bill Clinton is a continuing liability to Hillary’s campaign (given his seeming inability to refrain from inserting himself into the equation whenever possible) and Hillary would govern as a barely-reconstructed Socialist ready and willing to undertake market fiddling in violation of basic economic principles and good sense. Tapper was wrong to misquote Bill. Hillary is still a threat to the economic wellbeing of the US.
Clear enough?
Absolutely. I think your opinion matters and the clarification is important, even on a small scale.
