Since the President announced his intention to put forth his SCOTUS pick this evening, rumors that Edith Clement was the nominee had been flying about in many political circles. However, Bush passed over Clement and nominated John Roberts instead (a good choice, if I’m reading things right, by the way), which means there are going to be a lot of disappointed copy editors and CNN Headline News caption writers. You just know they were relishing a “Bush Seeks ‘Clement’-cy For The Court” or two.
Still, there’s hope: be on the lookout for a few “Dread Pirate Roberts” or “Cops n’ Roberts” over the next weeks.
*grin*

I heard a good point in reference to this selection earlier today. With one automatic vacancy, Bush can get the conservative judge in with a fight. When Rendquist does go out, it leaves the opening for the shoe in female conservative. With Bush putting the big fight on the male for the first opening and the liberals predictively fighting for a female they have no choice but to let her in when Rendquist leaves. At least that was the gist of the argument.
