Sunday marked my “first” Father’s Day as a father. I use the quotes because, well, I guess I’m a bit superstitious about the whole birthing process and so I don’t quite consider myself a father just yet. Dunno if that sounds stupid, but that’s how I feel.
Anyways, Sunday morning’s church service was a special one, as a Baptist church from Lewisville, TX sent their youth choir (around 100 high schoolers plus chaperones) to help out with a sports camp our church is putting on this week, as well as a missions project with a women’s ministry located down in the Kensington section of Philly. Our pastor eschewed the traditional format of worship first, followed by a sermon and the announcements, offering and a closing song in favor of a service devoted almost entirely to worship. The choir blessed us with several songs – an awe-inspiring experience, to hear one hundred young voices raised in praise. It almost gives me shivers even now.
After church, my wife and I headed to Target to finish our baby registry. We’d already picked out most of the bigger items via the Target website, so we mainly registered for small things – “onesies”, burp cloths, flannel blankets, etc. Activities like that tend to make me very excited and more than a little nervous about our upcoming child, so it was with a measure of relief that I handed the bar code scanner “gun” over to the customer service attendant.
My wife and I then headed home for a quick nap (pregnancy is tiring, I tell you whut!) and then proceeded over to my parents’ house for dinner. My father’s birthday was Friday and my grandmother had ventured out from Arkansas for a visit, so we got to combine three occasions into one visit. How convenient. *grin*
My parents bought me a copy of Eats, Poops & Leaves, a humorous “etiquette” book/primer for parents-to-be, while my mother got a copy of I Already Know I Love You, a book written by Billy Crystal for his grandchild. You could see that my dad was trying hard not to get choked up about it, but I think he was really touched. My mom definitely got a case of the sniffles.
Then, it was time for dinner which was followed by my father’s one-and-only requested birthday cake – chocolate cake with vanilla icing. He asks for it every year and gets it every time.
All in all, a good first Father’s Day for me. I just can’t wait for next year.
