Disclaimer: I initially signed up for Pajamas Media and have been contacted by them several times, although I am not currently under any contract or obligation to them, as far as I know. I was invited, via email, to the gala opening in NYC.
Pajamas Media officially launched yesterday, and with their launch came their rebranding as “Open Source Media” or OSM™, for short. I really have to agree with Jeff Harrell on this one: bad move, guys. You’ve gone from a very distinctive name to one likely to get lost amongst a slew of software projects hosted on SourceForge (nice redesign, guys, by the way). Plus, to paraphrase Inigo Montoya: “I do not think [those words] mean[] what you think [they] mean[].” “Open Source” has a fairly specific meaning and it seems as if they’re simply trying to shoehorn their business model into the term in order to, well, I’m not exactly sure what.
Long and the short of it is that I was looking for a way to pay my hosting bills. OSM, as it is currently incorporated, doesn’t seem to offer smalltime bloggers like me that option. It’s biased towards providing bigger bloggers with an even bigger stage, I guess. Oh well. I guess I’ll be waiting for further official contact from PJOSM™ to figure out how this launch will really affect me.
(Waiting for ESR rant on the name…)
UPDATE #1: Oooh, looks like I at least made it onto the OSM blogroll.
