NFL Notes

Egahhhh!

  • With the defeat of both the Patriots and the Bears this weekend, there is little chance of a Superbowl XX rematch, absent a Madden Bowl appearance by both teams. Fortunately, this also means we will escape endless re-airings of “The Superbowl Shuffle”.
  • With their victory yesterday, the ’05 Steelers become the first 6th-seeded team (since the move to 12 total playoff teams in 1990) to make it to the Conference championship. They also became the first incarnation of the Steelers to nearly give my father three infarctions in the final three minutes of the game.
  • The new Burger King “Steve Young” commercial? Brilliant.
  • The Guiness Outtakes commercial? Extra-specially brilliant.
  • Memo to McDonalds: Burger King has the “creepy plastic mascot” advertising market cornered. Your attempts are pitiful and more than a little sad.
  • I almost felt bad for the Patriots on Saturday, but then I remembered that Tom Brady went to Michigan. I no longer feel bad.
  • A bold prediction: “Teal” is the new “peach”. Like the Buccaneers of yore, neither the Panthers nor the Jaguars will win a superbowl until they rid themselves of their current uniforms. Seriously, the Panthers’ sideline jackets look like bouncers’ getup from some seedy strip club in the mid ’90’s.
